Site Surveying

This module, in it's name and to put simply, is on learning how to survey a site. It's actually a very complex subject, where we have to learn different methods of surveying used for different times and reasons (i.e. to measure angle, slope, level, etc.) as well as understanding the instruments & terms (eg. Bench-mark, azimuths, etc.) used to do so. Other than that, we also learned the ways to correct the values measured, with different methods having different ways for correction, as accuracy is an important matter in the module.

These different 'methods' consists of Differential Levelling, Chaining, Traverse & many more. Learning the module will help us identify a construction site more expertly & further our skills of measurements. This module is taught by Mr. Chai Voon Chiet & has a mid-term test along with 2 Fieldwork reports without the need of a final exam.

Report Assignments

These projects require a group of 3-4 people to do two different types of surveying on the campus carpark using the given instruments needed to do so. After doing the fieldwork, the group is required to put the data into a report.

My group consists of 4 people:

  1. Muhammad Haziq bin Hj Zariful

  2. Sharon Chow Ci Yung

  3. Tan Chu Yee

  4. Parham Farhadpoor

Before this, we were just reading from a textbook and did tutorials questions, this project helps us understand more by doing the practical work of what we have been taught. It also helps us organise a group & enhance our teamwork as this fielwork along with the report requires us to fully utilise the given number of members.

Report 1 - Levelling

Report 2 - Traversing

The first report is on the Levelling topic. We were given an Auto-level, a bar coded level rod & a tripod, along with a map of the campus carpark which showed points (turning points) of where we should measure the levelling, measuring the Backsight and Foresight.

For this report, the girls (Sharon Chow & Tan Chu Yee) were assigned to do the corrections & convert the data into a report.

The second report is based on the Traversing Topic. We were given the Theodolite, ranging rod, a tripod & tape measure in order to measure the length and angles of 4 points at anywhere in the same carpark.

For this report, the boys (Parham Farhadpoor & Haziq Zariful) were assigned to do the corrections & convert the data into a report.
