CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY 1
This module is much like learning the engineering side of construction that a Quantity Surveyor must know, where we learn about the structures & components of a building, while studying about its use & importance. Such knowledge is important for a QS as they must know the ins & out of the buildings they would measure. Examples of such structures would be Foundations, Walls, Staircase & concrete.
Not only that, the module also teaches step by step process of constructing a building, right from choosing a site to the finishing works. Thus, we learned the environment of a construction site, the conditions that a site would need to be convinient & the temporary works for the workers. However, it focuses more on studying the structures as mentioned.
The lecturer who taught us this module was Mr. Leong Boon Tik, who was a great, approachable lecturer who has helped me & my classmates understand the basics of construction through the tutorials & assignments given.
CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY GROUP ASSIGNMENT
Early on the semester, we were already given our firsy construction technology assingment. The assignment requires students to be in groups of 5 and has 3 parts:
-
Find or take sketches, drawings & photos of a building that we selected
-
Identify the foundation, slab, roof by reading the drawings that we acquired from the contractors or by observation.
-
Research what are the alternatives for the foundation, slab & roof.
The assignment aims to help students identify characteristics of the foundation, slab & roof while researching their differences in advantages & disadvantages that would help in different environments or situation. It is a lot like a problem solving assignment, asking us,'which is better?' and it could be in different aspects such as cost, suitability or durability.
My group has chosen Moy Chin Hoong's bungalow house in Penang as the drawings is retrievable from his father.
