Building Services 1

This Building Services module is the first of two to be taught in the course which aims to teach students on the various services of a building. The second module will be taught in the following semester while this one covers services such as drainange system, sewage system, ventilation, water supply systems & many more.

This module is taught by the young and recently doctorated Dr. Kam Kenn Jhun & has a mid-term test, a project consisting of 2 tasks & a lastly a final exam.

It is an important module which needs to be given full attention & understanding as Quantity Surveyors need to identify the full components that makes a building in order to perform or taksks, from the materials to the services, moreover, we studied engineer drawings on services such as hot and cold water supply which would help us to do so. Learning about the services allows us to understand its importance in the construction of a building.

Learning Outcomes

Identify relevant information related to water supply, liquid waste disposal, storm water management,security services and ventilation system.

Explain principles, systems, space implications and regulations related to water supply, storm water and waste water disposal, internal air quality and telecommunication services.

Recognize and interpret drawings related to buildings services and to illustrate services construction in schematic diagrams.

Distinguish and differentiate the installation of various types of services in a building.

Report & Presentation Assignment

We were given an assignment for the module which require 6 students to form a group where the group needs to work together in order to make a report & presentation based on a topic chosen by the lecturer where it consists of information about the topic which would allow us to understand about it along with a case-study.

Both the presentation and the report aims to show the lecturer our thorough understanding on the topic as a group while it also helps our presentation & communication skills, both presenting research on paper and on a presentation slide towards a group of people.

Our topic chosen was 'Building Integration of Solar Energy' while our case-study was on the 'Sun-Moon Mansion'. I was assigned to do research and present on the case-study as well as arranging the presentation. Over the course of the assignment, we were able to finish in safely in time & hopefully managed to wow the crowd and Dr. Kam.
