INTRODUCTION TO LAW
Quantity Surveyors advises clients on a range of legal & contractual issues on the project, hence, future Quantity Surveyors like us would need to know the proper legal knowledge in order to be able to respond to issues that may arise & assist our client. Introduction to Law, as the name suggests, introduces us to the basics of law, particularly malaysian law by the Contracts Act 1950 & common law, exploring the relevant topics of the law which would relate to construction.
The topics of introduction to law are divided into three. Malaysian Law system introduces us to the Legal systems in malaysia, showing us the categories of law, how laws are made & the court system of Malaysia. Contract Law presents us to the legal issues that may arise when a contract is present between two people, showing us when a contract may be void, terminated or able to sue. Lastly, Tort law is when damages are experienced, caused by an individual & showing us the ways to earn compensations in the absense of a contract.
The lecturer for this module is Ms Anita Shoba, who was knowledgable throughout the course, gave helpful specific notes & gave a visual learning experience for law, such as drawing diagrams & flow charts on the whiteboard, which came as an advantage to myself as I am a visual learner, hence, I did not have many problems going through the module, albiet its complicatedness.
For the semester, we spent time thoroughly reading & understanding the 3 parts of the module mentioned, while Ms Shoba gave tutorial questions to assess our understanding. There were 2 tests conducted, one being on Malaysian Legal system & Contracts Law during the first half of the semester & the other on Tort Law during the second half of the semester.

Again, thanks to Ms Shoba's methods of teaching the module, I was able to easily understand the module. The problems I face were mostly careless mistake & reckless reading. Hopefully, I can learn to solve those problems & excel in the module.
