Measurement 4

After completing the main building works in Measurement III, Measurement 4 explores the methods of measurement for external works, studying the application of taking-off list, dim sheet calculations, Bill of Quantities and also the way to read the drawings, all in accordance to the SMM2 Malaysia.

The topics of this module consists of Surface Water Drain, Pipe culvert, Sump, Sewage Drain, Manhole, Water Reticulation, Piling, demolition works, Roads and Walkways. The modules's assessment consists of a mid-term test, a group assignment, an Elemental Cost Analysis Workshop & a Final Exam.

The module is taught by Mr. Loo Seong King, who was dependant in the times when I was ever confused by the new types of measurements I have never experienced before.

Group Assignment

Just like the other Measurement assignments, we are required to measure the components that we were taught in the module, in this case, components in a terrace house, however, unlike previous measurement assignment, we were required to find the drawings ourselves from consultant QS or Architects. We were also required to measure all the main building works that we were taught as well as prepare a tender document containing all necessary forms and content, such as Preambles, Schedule of Finishes & Tender forms. The tender document must then be presented to Mr. Loo as we imitate ourselves as Consultant Quantity Surveyors providing information to a client.

The purpose of this assignment is to experience preparing a tender document for the contractors to compete in, and test our measurement skills as we measure components from all measurement modules so far.

Elemental Cost Analysis

In this semester, we were given what is called Elemental Cost Analysis (ECA) Week, where students were assigned to groups of 14 members and required them to work together and estimate the Cost per square metre of a given building by calculating the Gross Floor Area. The cost analysis consists of 3 forms, one containing all information of the building and costing, the second containing the cost per m2 of components as well as elemental ratio and quantity, whereas the third contains the specifications of the components. At the end of given week, the group is supposed to present their material to 3-4 'judges', lecturers.

The purpose of the ECA week is to prepare students and give them experience in ECA, as we are also supposed to perform elemental cost analysis during our internship period and also in order to obtain chartered statuses from RICS. This being the grouping with the most people, it also reminds students the need of teamwork and motivation in order to finish an assignment at a given amount of time.
