Construction Technology II

Just like the Measurement module, this module builds up to the knowledge we have acquired through the first construction technology module during semester 1 & hence has helped us easily understand as we know what we were learning about and studied something more familiar.

Again just like the first module, this module introduces to us the structures and construction processes of a building for the same reason, because our career requires us to know the ins & outs of a building to measure. Also studying about its uses, importance, advantages, disadvantages & of course when and why it is used.

The construction processes taught during this particular semester were basement excavations, permanent & temporary support, suspended ceiling, portal frame building and many more. This module was taught by Mr. Chiew Seng Khoon and consists of a mid-term test, an Individual assignment, a group assignment and a final exam.

Indivual Assignment

Earlier in the semester we were already given an assignment for this module, which requires us to sketch drawings given to us by the lecturer through the TImeS website. This assignment aims to help students understand the elements of a construction by skecthing and labelling them.

There are 20 drawings to be sketched where the drawings are on the components and parts of a building element complete with labels such as roof section, pile cap foundation, locking pin, etc. . The drawings with the cover page were to be submitted on the 27th of November but it is allowed to submit earlier.

I did so and submitted about 2 weeks earlier as there were fewer assignments in the first half of the semester.

Group Assignment

The second assignment given actually allows students to choose between to ways in presenting a construction process based on the module. One way is by a detailed and well-researched report while the other way is to present through a video of a minimum 20 minutes. Both ways requires a group of 4-5 members to work together to finish the assignment.

While working on the project, it would help students to fully understand a construction process while thoroughly researching on the very subject. It would also help students enhance skills on presenting research, either on a report or as a video.

Along with me, my group consists of Thean Hai Xu (Group Leader), Tony Tang Lee Lung, Tan Wen Hao & Pui Sun Lee and we have chosen to do a video as it is less time-consuming and allows us to easily assign tasks while using our capabilities in video editing. Our construction process chosen was Basement Excavation while the tasks of each group members can be seen at the credits of the video.
