MEASUREMENT 1

Measurement 1 focuses on introducing us to the principles, purpose & standard method of Measurement, instructed by & based on SMM II Malaysia. The Measurement modules in the course starts from the ground up, from structural works to specific windows & doors, hence, Measurement 1 concentrates on excavation works, foundation & concrete works for structures such as columns & beams, as well as their reinforcements.

Also as an introduction to the module of measurement in general, as this is our first measurement module, we were thought how to prepare a BQ (Bill of Quantities), an important component to learn as a Quantity Surveyor, as we would carry the knowledge & understanding up until not just the course, but also throughout our lives as a Quantity Surveyor.

The lecturer who taught us this module was Sr Ang Fuey Lin, who was very helpful & knowledgable throughout the semester & has helped me understand the basics of Measurement. Hopefully one day, that knowledge would carry us into success.

SITE REPORT ON CONSTRUCTION AT JALAN DALAI LAMA

For weeks, we have been learning the theories, methods & materials of construction in a classroom and by the books, not being able to witness the practical application of those knowledge that we have acquired. Therefore, it would make sense that a visit to a construction site would be vital in progressing our knowledge to further heights, by observing & witnessing the structures, the materials & the workers who would convert drawings into reality. Hence, Ms Ang would then book a visit to a construction site in Jalan Dalai Lama, in Mukim Petalling.

To ensure that we have learned from the experience, we were required to make a detailed report, mostly with pictures that would prove our observational skills on site of the materials, equipments, workers & be self aware of the safety measures when on site.

MEASUREMENT GROUP PROJECT

On the second half of the semester we were given an our first measurement group assignment, which requires 5 members to work as a team & measure a 5 storey building, roleplaying as the Quantity Surveyors in charge in the project team. This would include making a Bill of Quantities, Taking-Off List, Query Sheets & all the relevant measurements as if working on a real building. Ms Ang would provide the relevant drawings & we would have to show our ability that we have acquired so far to read the drawings carefully. The measurements would be divided into Work Below Ground Floor Levels, Piling, Work Above Ground Floor Levels, Columns & Roof Beams.

I was in charge of measurement of First Floor and Typical Beams, being given 2 weeks to complete it.

Honestly, the difficult part of the project was how much time we needed to complete it, however, it is not an excuse & I should teach myself to be time-managing, learn from experience. I like the idea of group members roleplaying as being the quantity surveying team of the project, it helped show us what we would be going through in a working environment, identifies our weaknesses when working & shows us the importance of communication between each other. Thankfully, I was able to complete the project thanks to help from my father, my senior, my group members & of course Ms Ang who was helpful was always ready when we have enquiries on the project. This project has helped me grow as a future QS & the experience will be valuable for the coming days.
