Building Services II

This Building Services module is the last of two to be taught in the course which aims to teach students on the various services of a building in coninuation with the first Building Services module tught in semester 2. This module focuses on 4 aspects of a building's services which are Mechanical ventilation & Air conditioning system, Fire protection system, Vertical transportation & Electrical Supply.

This module is taught by Dr. Kam Kenn Jhun & just like the first module, has a mid-term test, a project consisting of 2 tasks & a lastly a final exam.

Like the first module, it foloowed the same format of learning, also due to having the same lecturer, we understood by identifying components of a system, types of system & even looked into engineers' drawings to fully grasp the topic & help us understand.

Learning Outcomes

To create awareness and understanding of the principles of building services system in a building.
To introduce various building services system that are available and the limitation of the choices - the

services considered are primarily fire protection system, vertical transportation systems, mechanical air-

conditioning system and electricity generation and supply system.
To prepare students to apply their understanding and knowledge for their preparation of the Bills of

Quantities and for estimating purposes.

Report & Presentation Assignment

We were given a similar assignment like last semester's where a group needs to work together in order to make a report & presentation, however, the difference in this semester's assignment is that we have to go to a site, for example a mall, & identify the systems the building uses according to the topics we have learned in building services class. Other than that, we also had to identify problems the building faces with 2 of these systems & recommend a possible solution.

The report aims to show the lecturer our understanding of the topics he have taught us, as we have to implement these knowlede to do a detailed report on the given system, from the components used to the different types the building uses, it also helps enhance our research skills and our presentation on paper. The presentation on the other hand helps us improve our communication & presenting skills, important factors when we present our dissertation in semester 6 as pointed by Dr. Kam on the day of my presentation.
