Financial Management

The Financial Management module is a new module introduced in semester 5. This module aims to help students on the management of finance and businesses, essential in just about any industry, especially construction. This includes management of cash flows, capital investment appraisals and financial report & ratio analysis.

This module's Objectives are as follow:-

1. To understand the core principles and practices of financial management in maximising the value of the firm

2. To appraise capital investment proposals using various methods of capital budgeting

3. To forecast and manage cash flows of a business.

Mr. Lai Chee Kin is the lecturer for this module & the module's assessment consists of a mid-term test, a group Report & Presentation project and a final exam.

In my foundation course in 2013, I went through an 'Introduction to Accounting' module & I enjoyed it, particularly because I did well. Though the knowledge of this previous module was helpful in interpreting & giving me a good start of Financial Management, it was only for the first few weeks, as I have learned later in the semester that Financial Management is much more extensive, needing much more critical thinking. Certainly it was much more difficult but I pushed myself to go through it and hopefully it could yield to my satisfaction in the end.

Group Assignment

The group assignment for this module requires a group of 6 people to make an analysis report of the Financial performance of Sycal Ventures Berhad, an investment company involving contracting, manufacturing and property developing activities. After constructing the report, the group is required to give a presentation of their findings to Mr. Lai.

The Group assignment was conducted fairly well thanks to the good guidance of the assignment brief prepared by Mr. Lai. Of course, questions still needed to be answered, as this type of assignment has never been done before. The assignment structure is also good coverage of what has been taught throughout the semester. In my view, as this group assignment was done with a group that I have never been with before (my usual friends left me out), the communication, the chemistry, the mentality to do this assignment was quite lackluster. I was determined to make it work though, as my father once said that we cannot control the people we will be working with in the future, so try making it work. Thankfully after some restless nights, this assignment was done & a sense of fulfillment was felt to me.
