Project Management

The Project Management module is a new module introduced in semester 6. This module introduces students to the job scope and concept towards the Construction Project Management profession. As students, Project Management is an option for us to venture towards a separate set of skills, towards a different postgraduate course or wholly towards a different career that we might find an interest on. As Quantity Surveyors, it is highly likely for us to work closely with Project Managers, hence it is useful to equip ourselves to the scope and duties of Project Managers.

The module is organised by closely following the 10 knowledge areas of Project Management highlighted by the PmBok guide; in Project Cost, Time, Quality, Risk, Procurement Management, as well as Project Termination. Along the semester, the module also introduces students on the Microsoft Project software, a software widely used by Project Managers. Mr. Leong Boon Tik is the lecturer for this module & the module's assessment consists of an individual report assignment, a group Report project and a final exam.

I feel that this module is well organised, whereby we are introduced to Project Management boards and institutions such as PMP or PMI, we are then introduced to the knowledge areas of Project Management, in which we closely study on each of them throughout the semester. This systematic way allows students to familiarise better and have a better understanding. Personally, I find the module interesting due to my methodical nature and critical way of thinking in doing things. Before the semester commenced, I have also decided to take a postgraduate course in Project Management, hence I kept very close attention to the module syllabus and find the knowledge, especially the introduction to the Microsoft Project software very useful. Regardless of that decision however, I feel the knowledge is of great value to us students as we may be able to work in a more manageable way in different aspects of a project, as such is required to be a good Quantity Surveyor.

Group Assignment

The group assignment for this module requires a group of 6 people to propose on a development to a chosen site. As provided in the assignment brief, the report includes the Project Background, Justifications, Objectives, Benefits, Work Breakdown Structure, Cost Estimation and Summary.

The Group assignment was conducted fairly well thanks to a specific format provided by the assignment brief prepared by Mr. Leong. Additionally, the assignment structure is good coverage of what has been taught throughout the semester and personally, it was quite fun to have the creativity of providing an imaginary development on our own chosen site. I was included in a group of close friends with good chemistry, it has allowed me to complete the report assignment with both satisfaction and enjoyment in conducting it.

Individual Assignment

On the 26th of April 2017, we were invited by Mr. Leong to attend a Guest Lecture conducted by Mr. Tony Ma, a Program Director of the School of Natural and Built Environments from University of South Australia (UniSA), titled 'What Makes a Project Successful?'. Mr. Leong took the opportunity to allow us to analyse the guest lecture more by providing an individual assignment, requiring students to make a report discussing modern project management tools and skills that can make a project successful.

I feel the report is a good analytical approach towards the concept of the 10 knowledge areas of Project Management as well as modern day project management tools, allowing individuals to provide a critical thinking in the report assignment.
