BUILDING MATERIALS
Every member of a construction team has to know the materials that would be used on construction. Quantity Surveyors, who must know the ins & out of a building, must then know the materials that would be measured & applied. This module focuses on teaching us the different types of material used for contruction, whether for structural works or finishing works, such as concrete, timber or paint. When learning the material, we go in depth to see it's advantages, disadvantages, characteristics, application & types,
The lecturer for Building Materials is Puan Hasmanira Mokhtar, who has taught us various types of materials week by week & has helped us understand the usage of different materials. In order to test our knowledge & understanding, Ms Hasmanira has organised two assignments throughout the semester while also giving us a test on
BUILDING MATERIALS ASSIGNMENT 1
The first assignment we were given requires students in groups of 4 to create a powerpoint presentation comparing 2 different types of special paint. When comparing, we need to take into account it's advantages, disadvantages, application & characteristic/properties in general. This would thus require the group to make thorough research, finding specifications while summarising & compiling the information into an understandable presentation.
My group was given the Epoxy & Enamel Paint. Since there were 4 members, we divided it by a paint for 2 members & compiling it a week before submission.
BUILDING MATERIALS ASSIGNMENT 2
The second assignment that we were given also requires us to be in groups, but his time in 5. We were told to pick a site anywhere we would like & identify the materials that the site uses, whether exterior or interior materials. The areas that must be covered are ceiling, floor, staircase, structures, door and windows. For each, we were told to identfy its characteristics & properties such as application, sustainability, performance, aesthetics & maintenance, determining whether they would be advantageous or gives a disadvantage. The next part is to identify an alternative for the material that was used, comparing with the currently sed material. The assignment must be done in a report form.
For my group, we picked the 3rd library floor as our site & I was in charge of the ceiling.
